Under 16 B Semi-Final.

Blackrock 1 --- 6 Whitechurch 3 --- 9.

Black rock’s second string under 16s bowed out of this league last Sunday when they were defeated by a fine Whitechurch outfit. Graham Howard had a fantastic game at centerfield, ably assisted by Peter Horgan in goal with Sean Conway and Sean Hanlon playing some good hurling in the backline. Well done to this team who have given some great performances this year and put a lot of work into developing their skills.

September 2004

Under 16 Hurling Championship.

Semi-final played at Bishopstown, Tuesday 31st August 2004.

Blackrock 1 --- 4 Glen Rovers 2 --- 12.

This was a comprehensive victory by the Glen. The northside lads were first to the ball in many areas of the field and played very direct hurling. The match was effectively over after 15 minutes when Glen corner forward Patrick Horgan banged in the second of his goals. He was man-of-the-match, finishing with 2 --- 8 in total and gave an outstanding display of hurling.

The decision to place two markers on Horgan, with the benefit of hindsight was a mistake. It probably confused the Blackrock backs and ensured that the Glen had an extra back which allowed virtually all the Blackrock attacks to be repulsed easily and the ball to be returned into the Blackrock half immediately. When J.P.Carroll marked Horgan one to one in the second half, he limited him to one point from play.

Unfortunately nothing went right for the Rockies on the night and with the Glen lads in top form there was only going to be one result. Blackrock are better than this display would indicate as the Bishopstown result showed.

Half time was 2 --- 8 to a point from a free by David Duggan. Blackrock put on a much better performance in the second half, but could not penetrate the Glen backs with Garry Bracken and Darragh Mulcahy excelled. Eric Hegarty and Steve Guerin came more into the game and scored points while Shane O'Sullivan crashed a 21 yard free to the net. In the backline, JP Carroll had curtailed Patrick Horgan, while sub keeper Gordon Aherne brought off two excellent saves.

This Glen team looked very good and they will be difficult to beat in the final which is against Na Piarsaigh who have accounted for the Barrs in the other semi-final.

August 2004

Under 16A Championship.

 At St Finbarrs. Tuesday 24^th August 2004.

 Blackrock 5 --- 6   Bishopstown 1 --- 9.

Two early goals from Declan Kelleher put the Rockies in the driving seat in this keenly contested championship game. Although the Town fought back with the aid of the breeze to level by the 25^th minute they were very dependent on the ability of Thomas Murray to combat the Rockies. A Shane O’Sullivan pointed free put the Rockies ahead just before half time at 2 --- 3 to 1 --- 5.

Points from Karl Leonard, David Duggan and Declan Kelleher enabled Blackrock to keep their noses in front in the second half. In the 40^th minute, Colm O’Brien at full-forward struck for a vital goal. Young Murray in a roving role kept Bishopstown in contention with points from frees and play. However he was well marked by Brian Ahern and Karl Leonard in turn.

A brilliant solo effort from Steve Guerin finished with the ball in the net and put the Rockies 7 points to the good with 10 minutes remaining. With JP Carroll performing brilliantly at full-back there was no way back for the maroon lads. Eric Hegarty completed the scoring with a fine opportunist goal in the last minute. All in all a fine team display by the Rockies in what was their first competitative victory over this Bishopstown team for some considerable time.  

Under 16B Hurling Semi-Final.

Played at Mayfield Thursday 26^th August 2004.

Blackrock 1 --- 3  Mayfield 4 --- 13.

The early exchanges were fairly even, however Mayfield with the aid of a strong wind had powered into a substantial half time lead, 2 --- 9 to 1 --- 0. The Blackrock goal came from a long range free from Roy Power after 20 minutes. It was evident from an early stage that the Rockies lacked penetration up front and this contributed to a large extent to their exit from this competition.

After the turnaround, the Blackrock backline was again under severe pressure right through and fought hard to keep the scoreline manageable. Colm Daly and Roy Power were excellent, while Gordon Aherne in goal had a fine game.

July 2004

Under 16 league.

Blackrock 6 --- 8  Carrigaline 2 --- 6.

Carrigaline was a point up at half time 2 --- 4 to 2 --- 3 however the Rockies aided by a strong wind in the second half turned up the heat and went for goals. Eric Hegarty was flying in the forward line and banged in two, while Gavin Byrd got two more. J.P.Carroll and Rory Wedell were in great form as the Rockies ran out easy winners.

Brief note at the end of the year for the U-15 hurling. 

The team is now finished all this year's activities. It was not a fruitful year on the playing field. Yet, three of the team are chosen for the Cork U-16 panel next year, 2004; JP O' Carroll, Mark Drummond and Billy McCarthy. These are fine hurlers and very good exponents of the game. We wish them well in their hurling careers and hopefully more of their age-group will achieve better things in the future as they progress to minor over the next few years.

I, Br. Patrick Fitzgibbon have decided to step aside for next year and a new coach will be appointed for the new season of 2004. I wish them all well in the future and I know they will extend respect to the new person like they did to me. I thank them all for their support and respect and I hope that their hurling career will gain new heights next year.

The U-15 team was to play Inniscarra last night, Friday 19th
September. Unfortunately, Inniscarra failed to show up. 

Our team was ready to play and the referee waited the required amount of time. The team selected was: Mark Drummond, David Duggan, Colm O'Brien, Tony Linehan,
David Nagle, JP O' Carroll, Colm Daly, Shane O' Sullivan, Ruairi Weddel,
Denis O' Sullivan, David O' Driscoll, Darragh Kelleher, Brendan Byrne,
Peter Horgan, Brian Kavanagh, Tomas Walsh. Brian Lombard. Three were
unavailable; Eric Hegarty, Gavin Byrd and Karl Leonard.

Training is fixed for Monday evening at 5.00pm

Under 15 hurling league. 

Saturday 5th April Church Road. Blackrock 4 --- 5 Midleton 1 --- 4 

This was a good competitive game, with little between the sides until the Rockies pulled away in the second half, once their backs got on top. Two goals from David O'Driscoll, a goal each from Stephen Coughlan and Denis O' Sullivan helped the home side to victory. Eric Hegarty, Tomas Walsh, Colm Daly and Tony Linehan played well , while captain JP Carroll was outstanding in what was a very good team performance.

Result; Semi Final League under 14 Church Road.

Na Piarsaigh 2-6          Blackrock 0-3

In weather conditions unsuited to good hurling Na Piarsaigh came out on top in this under 14-league semi-final played at Church Road last Saturday. Despite the best efforts of Gavin Byrd and Eric Hegarty, Na Piarsaigh were always in control.  Colm O’ Brien, Colm Daly and David Duggan played well for the Rockies

Under 14A City Final

Blackrock 2 ---7 Bishopstown 1 --- 11.

Bishopstown raced into an early lead of 4 points before Blackrock got off the mark. A goal and two excellent points from Rockies full-forward Eric Hegarty brought the sides level. Just before half-time J.P. Carroll hit the net for the Rockies to ensure they went in at half time 2 ---3 to 6 points ahead in this Championship final match played in glorious conditions at Pairc Ui Rinn last Saturday. Some early points from frees brought Bishopstown back into the match with Brian Noonan having a great game at centre back. An opportunist goal midways through the half from the Bishopstown full forward placed the Town in the driving seat. Indiscipline in the Rockies forwards cost them dearly in the run-in. Despite every effort by an outstanding J P Carroll the gap could not be closed .

20/9/2002 

Blackrock 3-12 Carrigaline 2-12.

This is the A County competition. This was played in excellent conditions and the pitch in Carrigaline was in excellent shape. It was close game and went down to the final whistle. All players gave a good account of themselves. Shane O' Sullivan was in great form at mid-field and JP Carroll and Eric Hegarty played fine hurling in the forward line. Brian Ahern gave a star performance at Centre Back and Stephen Guerin played tremendously well when introduced at corner forward after ten minutes. The full back line held their own with Colm O' Brien mastering the full back position. 

The team was: Mark Drummond, David Duggan, Colm O' Brien, Colm Daly, Brian Ahern, Billy McCarthy, Tomas Walsh, Gavin Byrd, Shane O' Sullivan, Michael Harrington, JP Carroll, David Nagle, David O' Driscoll, Eric Hegarty, Denis O' Sullivan. Update September 19th, 2002

Recently matches were played after the long summer break. We lost to Na Piarsaigh and won to 'Douglas in the City League.

On Thursday 12th. September we were playing against the Glen in the semi-final of the championship. Blackrock 3-7 Glen Rovers 3-10. This was a wonderful game of hurling and the score line tells its own story. There were wonderful individual displays from both sides. JP Carroll(Rockies) Brian Looby(Glen) played wonderful hurling. Indeed both teams were excellent and it would be unfair to name individuals. We welcome back Gavin Byrd after his long lay off due to injury. We also welcome a new player in Brendan Byrne. Brendan hails from Ballygunner, Waterford and his family have moved into Balllintemple. We wish him every success with the Rockies.

Our next game is in the county section on Friday 20th September against Carrigaline in Carrigaline at 6.30pm. We will gather at the club 5.15pm and the bus will leave at 5.30pm.

Under-14 Feile Hurling Final

On Wednesday 29th May, all roads led to Mitchelstown for this much awaited final.  Believe it or not, no other pitch was available for this important final!!
Due to the recent inclement weather most pitches were closed.

Our boys gave a very good account of themselves and played wonderful hurling.  The standard of hurling was excellent and despite the conditions there were very few frees, a credit to both teams.

Brian Ahern and Colm O'Brien gave superb displays in the full back line.  Our Captain, J.P. Carroll gave the display of his life and out hurled all opponents placed on him.  By his side in the half-back line, Billy McCarthy played his usual best and scored some magnificent points from play or frees!.

Karl Leonard and Shane O'Sullivan held their own at mid-field as did Eric Hegarty at centre-forward, who scored a magnificent goal towards the end of the game.  Some players were drafted in at the last minute for this game, who also turned in a very good performance.  Colm Daly, Ruairi Waddel, Gordon Ahern and David O'Driscoll played very well.  All played well and it is impossible to name everyone here.  The team was: Gordon Ahern, Brian Ahern, Colm O'Brien, Colm Daly, Ruairi Waddel, J.P. Carroll (Captain), Billy McCarthy, Karl Leonard, Shane O'Sullivan, David Meyler, Eric Hegarty, Darragh Kelleher, Denis O'Sullivan, David O'Driscoll and Michael Harrington.

Our friend, Gavin Byrd, is undergoing surgery this morning (30th May) on his broken wrist.  His Surgeon has assured him that his hand will heal perfectly.  Good news for Gavin and Blackrock as he has a bright future in hurling!.

Feile na nGael Semi-Final Win

The Blackrock Feile team had a great win over Inniscarra in the Semi final of the Feile competition at the Glen field on Sunday 19^th May.  The teams were well matched in the first half with some great points being scored by both sides however a Blackrockgoal midways through the first half separated the sides at half time.  The score was 1 ---4   to  0---4 .

Blackrock came out much more determined in the second half and continued to pile on the pressure with some great firsttime hurling.  The Rockies ran out eventual winners on the score             

Blackrock  2----11      Inniscarra  0----5.

The team now goes forward to the final on Saturday 25/5/02. Venue to be decided.

Unfortunately, one of our star players, Gavin Byrd, was injured in an accident on Friday near his home. He sustained injuries to his wrist and will be out of hurling for a few weeks. We all wish him a speedy recovery.

Feile Win May 12th 

The Blackrock Feile team had a comfortable win over a gallant Douglas side on Sunday 12th May at Ballinlough.  The match, played in appalling weather conditions, was very even in the first half.  Blackrock playing with the aid of a strong wind in the second half gradually pulled away and the match finished with the scoreline; Blackrock  5  --- 6                   Douglas  1 --- 1

Under-13 (Born 1988) Annual Report 2001

The players are very committed and rarely any of them miss a training session. They love the game of hurling and are very loyal to the Rockies. A very fine group and each is supportive of the other and are very respectful to the selectors and mentors of the Club. It is a pleasure to work with them.

Their parents and families are very encouraging and always are at the games to affirm them.
